Do you like plantains? Here are 7 interesting things I learned about them.

My love for plantains has grown! This past weekend a couple friends and I went on a hunt for some Cuban food. A good skirt steak with a side of chimichurri and all the fixings. You know, the arroz con frijoles y platanos! I swear, I have tried and tried again to make a good tender skirt steak at home with chimichurri at home but nothing compares to eating it out. Mine never turns out as good and my meat ends up tough.

During dinner we caught up on our weekly life updates and discussed our love for plantains. One of my friends said, “I just love plantains”, while we agreed out loud and shoved another bite of a plantain in our mouths. We enjoyed the plantains we were eating but discussed how they probably weren’t too healthy of an option!  I’m pretty sure I’ve only eaten ones fried in oil, which meant they probably weren’t the best for us. After I went home I looked online and did some research about them. Here is seven interesting facts that I learned that I have to share!

1.) Plantains carry more vitamin A than bananas. Besides being a powerful antioxidant, vitamin A plays a vital role in the visual cycle, maintaining healthy mucus membranes, and enhancing skin complexion.

2.) They also provide adequate levels of minerals such as iron, magnesium, and phosphorous.

3.) Fresh plantains have more potassium than bananas.

4.) They help with the discomfort caused by a woman’s menstrual cycle.

5.) Plantains contain a high amount of dietary fiber which helps ensure healthy bowels and
reduces constipation.

6.) They contain more vitamin C then Banana’s

7.) Just like Banana’s, Plantains also have rich sources of B-complex vitamins

I bet you didn’t know that, huh? So i don’t know about you but I’m going to continue to enjoy my fried plantains with joy!
